Stange: Amri a big loss for Juventus game

The Singapore Selection will be missing the services of key striker Khairul Amri on Saturday evening, after the LionsXII player fractured his cheekbone.

Coach Bernd Stange feels that Amri will be sorely missed, but is hopeful that his backups will prove adequate cover against Juventus FC.

The LionsXII striker suffered a fractured cheekbone against Felda United a few days ago and is ruled out for at least two weeks.

“I think Amri is a top striker in Singapore and it’s always a big loss when you lose your top striker,” Stange told FourFourTwo.

“He’s one of our best players and we wish that he will get well soon. He is the most unlucky player because he really wanted to play against Juventus.”

With Amri unavailable, Stange does have several options waiting in the wings, including the Warriors pair of Nicolas Velez and Miroslav Pejic, who have plundered 24 goals in the league this season.

“I have a lot of options. We have a great striker Nico Velez from Warriors FC and one of the top goalscorers in S.League in Pejic,” Stange said.

“There is also Iqbal Hussein from the Courts Young Lions.”

Although Stange was glad to name those options, he remained tight-lipped over his starting eleven.

“I have a starting line-up in mind, but not on my lips,” he said.

“On Saturday, the coaching staff will sit together and then deciding the starting line-up.

“It’s not just 11 players, they are all options. If a player doesn’t perform, we have to think what we can do.

“We have to avoid that (losing big) and we have to try our best and I am confident that we can show a few moments (of our own) against a world class team.

“We should not forget, we are selling a product to our fans here and we need to show something.

“There’s no need for extra motivation tomorrow because they are all very motivated to give their best.”
