Sundram calls up untested duo Shawal and Irfan, hands veteran Mustafic recall

Singapore head coach Sundram named his latest squad for the games against Malaysia and Hong Kong and there were a few surprises…

Singapore head coach V.Sundramoorthy has opted for more uncapped talents ahead of the international friendlies against Malaysia and Hong Kong.

The Lions will play Malaysia at the Sports hub on October 7 before flying to Hong Kong for a match on October 11.

Among those called up were three uncapped players. Geylang International goalkeeper Syazwan Buhari has displaced Balestier Khalsa custodian Zaiful Nizam as Singapore’s No.3

Fandi Ahmad eldest son, Irfan, too made the cut despite not playing much ever since he enlisted for National Service.

Geylang winger, Shawal Anuar, rounded off the trio after impressing many with his displays in the S.League in recent months.

Sundram too gave another veteran a recall, with Tampines Rovers captain Mustafic Fahrudin making the team.

Mustafic had not featured for the Lions since the 2012 Suzuki Cup win, as former coach Bernd Stange wanted to focus on nurturing youth players. The 35-year-old has 79 caps for Singapore.

“I have chosen a squad with a good mix of youth and experience. We have seasoned professionals like Daniel Bennett and Mustafic Fahrudin, who can guide the young players like Iqbal Hussain, M. Anumanthan and Irfan Fandi,” said Sundram in a media release.
