Home-grown company Garena is the new naming-rights sponsor for development side Young Lions, ahead of the new S.League season.
Football Association of Singapore (FAS) president Zainudin Nordin has hailed Garena’s decision to sponsor the Young Lions, declaring it a step forward for the future.
A press conference was held on Tuesday to announce the Young Lions’ new main sponsor, who penned a record two-year investment worth up to S$4 million for the club.
The local consumer internet platform provider is looking to build its presence in the country, of which it can boast millions of active users on PCs and mobiles.
The logo of their mobile marketplace application Shopee will be emblazoned across the front of the Young Lions jerseys from season 2016 onwards.
Garena succeed household appliance and furniture retailer Courts, who pulled the plug on their five-year long sponsorship of the FAS development side.
The company will provide $2m in cash sponsorship for the Young Lions and up to $2m for the promotion and development of the squad.
The cash influx has been welcomed as a key step forward in the history of club sponsors in Singaporean football, with Zainudin giving the arrangement his full support.
“Resources have always been a key constraint faced by the FAS. This record deal represents a great vote of confidence for our programmes,” the official said.
"The money will be spent wisely on the development of our most promising young talents and to build the next generation of Singapore national team players.
“We truly hope more corporate partners will come on board to support us and Singapore football, to ensure the future of our local football scene burns even brighter.”
