11 football starlets to look out for at the SEA Games
Thailand – Chananan Phombubpha
Scoring four goals against Laos on the opening day of the SEA Games football competition is a sure-fire way to make everyone stand up and take notice. The 23-year-old Muangthong United forward could have scored more if not for some brave goalkeeping by Laos goaltender Vathana Keodouangdeth.
Backed by an experienced Thailand team that is marshalled by the mercurial Chanathip Songkrasin, Phombubpha is poised to score even more. Strong in the air and uncompromising on the ground, Chananan is definitely an early favourite to be top scorer for this edition of the SEA Games.
Singapore – Ho Wai Loon
Despite not being in the Singapore national developmental squad Young Lions, Ho Wai Loon has impressed this season with Balestier Khalsa in the S-league and in the AFC Cup and was duly called up to join the SEA Games team.
His experience playing in the AFC Cup will come in handy in helping Singapore keeping a tight defence. The 21-year-old has a cultured left-foot and is able to play in both defensive and attacking positions down the left, which will be very useful if Singapore wants to go far in the tournament.
