2009 SEA Games gold medallists: Where are they now?

Eight years ago, 20 kids created history when they won Malaysia's first gold medal at the SEA Games in 20 years. Today, all of them should have been in line for a place in the national team, but as Aysha Ridzuan discovers, that has not been the case…

  • Sharbinee Allawee

Current team: N/A

Dubbed as one of the best goalkeepers in Malaysia at one time, he was initially the second choice goalkeeper in the 2009 SEA Games, but Farizal's suspension gave him the chance to step up.

However, that final has since become his only career highlight as things have gone downhill for him. This Terengganu born and bred spent most of his career in his hometown, but had a brief stint at Selangor in 2012 where he was the second choice to Norazlan Razali before returning to Terengganu a year later.

He was allowed to leave the club earlier in 2017 to seek treatment for cancer.

  • Farizal Marlias

Current team: JDT

Farizal was the first-choice goalkeeper at the 2009 edition, but it was Sharbinee who shined that year. That has been a recurring theme of his international career, as he played second fiddle to Khairul Fahmi Che Mat most of the times. However, he is consistently in the mind of national coaches, although he is currently serving a playing ban due to unsportsmanlike conduct.
