Extravagant gifts in the world of football

In light of Johor Darul Ta’zim receiving a private jet from the Sultan of Johor, FourFourTwo takes a look at what other lavish presents have been given in the history of football…

Well, Johor Darul Ta’zim have done it again.

As if creating history in football wasn’t enough – the Southern Tigers became the first Malaysian side to reach and win the AFC Cup final in 2015 – they have now become the first Malaysian club to have a private jet of their own.

This, after the Sultan of Johor presented the club with a state-of-the-art Gulfstream G550, valued at £47 million.

But what other generous gifts have been handed out in the history of football? Here are some other examples.

A whole island

Ronaldo and Mendes are on very good terms

Well, if reports are to be believed, Euro 2016 winner Cristiano Ronaldo gave his good friend and super agent Jorge Mendes a whole island as a wedding gift.

The former Manchester United forward was Mendes’ best man at his big day, but no matter how close one is, this is still an outrageously generous gift.

The island is supposedly located in Greece, where such properties are available for sale from at least £3 million.
