FourFourTwo's Malaysia Cup Preview, Round 1
Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) vs PKNS
Tue July 12 | Tan Sri Dato' Hj Hassan Yunos Stadium | 9pm
Last meeting: JDT 2 PKNS 1 (May 14, 2016; FA Cup final)
Player to watch: Pereyra Diaz (JDT), Gabriel Guerra (PKNS)
Billed as: A titanic rematch
Summary: PKNS want revenge after coming so close to winning the FA Cup. The MPL side felt they were robbed by poor refereeing decisions in that match but they will have a chance to get even in Johor Bharu.
The mighty JDT are near-unstoppable at home and PKNS cannot afford to play an open game for a good result.
Gabriel Guerra, who can play in attack and midfield, is PKNS’ trump card but the question is whether the former Boca Juniors player will be motivated to give his 100 per cent for the club following JDT’s interest in him for the 2017 season.
PKNS coach E. Elavarasan, however, is unlikely to bench Guerra as he is the key player for the club.
But Guerra is not the only player JDT should worry about. Chilean Matias Jadue and Argentine Juan Cobelli are equally lethal in attack.
A blockbuster match is on the cards with JDT having the edge in attack.
FFT prediction: JDT 3 PKNS 2
Perak vs PDRM
Wed July 13 | Perak Stadium | 9pm
Last meeting: PDRM 2 Perak 2 (May 4, 2016; MSL)
Player to watch: Elias Fernandes de Oliveira (Perak), Guilherme de Paula (PDRM)
Billed as: Karl Heinz Weigang is back to inspire Perak
Summary: It is a battle between two ‘very’ average MSL sides and a win for either will be crucial in their campaign to make the quarter-finals.
Karl Heinz Weigang maybe 81-years-old but age is no barrier for the German as he has come out of retirement for a second stint with Perak.
As expected, Weigang has reinforced the team by signing Albanian striker Xhevahir Sukaj and Uzbekistan midfielder Oybek Kilichev. He has also included former youth striker Razali Umar Kandasamy in the squad.
Fans could see an attacking orientated Perak in the restart of the season with Sukaj and leading scorer Elias Fernandes de Oliveira forging an understanding in attack.
Guilherme de Paula returns to Malaysian football, where he hopes to stamp his mark with PDRM after being ditched by Selangor despite scoring 12 goals for the team last season.
FFT prediction: Perak 1 PDRM 1
