Selangor vs Pahang player ratings: Doe returns to haunt Red Giants and a tale of two 'Cruzes'

Francis Forkey Doe’s double against his former team Selangor handed Pahang a well-deserved 3-1 win in the Malaysia Super League at Cheras Stadium on Saturday. Vijhay Vick dishes out the grades…

Debutant Patrick Cruz opened the scoring for the Elephants just seven minutes into the match after good work from skipper Matthew Davies and Gambian Mohamadou Sumareh. The other Cruz - Selangor's Alfonso De La Cruz, had a night to forget and was hauled off after a disastrous 32 minutes.

But, Selangor earned a penalty, gifting Rufino Segovia a fifth goal of the season as the teams headed into the dressing room level.

Doe then fired Pahang back in front after receiving the ball from Cruz in the 48th minute and the Elephants never looked like losing from then on. Doe sealed three points from the spot after Selangor centre-back Willian Pacheco handled the ball.

The defeat was Selangor’s second loss in row after winning the opening two league rounds of the 2018 campaign while Pahang have won twice now after starting their season with a draw and loss.

SELANGOR

KHAIRUL AZHAN KHALID: 6

Couldn’t have done much about the goals but there were times he looked shaky - something you might expect considering it was his first league game of the season.

FAIRUZ ABDUL AZIZ: 5

The centre-back was taken to the cleaners by Sumareh for Pahang’s first goal and he didn’t look comfortable every time the Gambian ran at him.

WILLIAN PACHECO: 5.5

He won the aerial balls but Pacheco’s careless handball effectively ended Selangor’s hopes of a comeback as the referee pointed straight to the spot.

RAZMAN ROSLAN: 5

The skipper made several important challenges after a mistake that almost allowed Chan Vathanaka to double the visitors' lead after 16 minutes. Another error in the second half almost allowed Cruz to bag his second.

K. KANNAN: 6

The left-back had to be on his toes all night by Sumareh. He had a relatively decent outing and won the Red Giants’ penalty at the other end after forcing Muslim into a challenge.

ALFONSO DE LA CRUZ: 3

Was barely in the match as he chased shadows and looked constantly out of position. He was taken off after the half-hour mark.

SYAHMI SAFARI: 5.5

The right-wing back was given a more attacking role compared to Kannan, but struggled to really trouble the Pahang defence.

EVAN DIMAS: 6.5

The Indonesian did most of the work in the middle of the park but Selangor’s midfield lacked a ball-winner to provide protection for the back four.

SAIFUL RIDZUWAN SELAMAT: 6

Put in a tough shift to provide numbers in the midfield but it was clear he didn’t have the ability to change the game.

AMRI YAHYAH: 4.5

It was a surprise that Amri lasted the entire match. The skipper saw quite a bit of the ball but apart from completing his passes, the veteran wasn’t much of a threat to Pahang at all.

RUFINO SEGOVIA: 6.5

The Spaniard is a good finisher but there simply wasn’t any service. He scored from the spot.

SUBSTITUTES

ILHAM ARMAIYN: 5.5

The first half substitute added some bite and flair to Selangor’s attack, only to later run out of steam.
