Vietnam edge closer to SEA Games semis, but Thailand, Indonesia can spoil party

Vietnam continued their streak in front of goal with a 4-0 win over Philippines to lead Group B with an unblemished record, but Thailand and Indonesia could still have the final say after recording wins over Cambodia and Timor Leste respectively.

Nguyen Huu Thang's Vietnam side play Indonesia and Thailand next and only need to collect one point from either game to book a place in the last four.

Vietnam have collected nine points in Group A followed by Indonesia and Thailand, both on seven points, while Philippines have three points.

(Indonesia) found it difficult to break down the gritty Timor Leste, who saw Filipe Oliveira sent off after players from both teams clashed

Timor-Leste and Philippines are out of contention after losing all their matches thus far.

Thailand, who are expected to defeat Philippines on Tuesday, and Indonesia could still break Vietnamese hearts as both sides still have to play the current group leaders.

On Sunday, Nguyen Cong Phuong drew level with tournament top scorer Aung Thu with his fourth to open the scoring against the Philippines in the 38th minute.

Vu Van Thanh, Nguyen Van Toan and Ho Tuan Tai then added goals in the second half as Vietnam scored four goals for the third successive game.

In Selayang, tempers flared in both matches that took place on Sunday.

Marinus Wanewar put the Indonesians ahead in the first half but they found it difficult to break down the gritty Timor Leste, who saw Filipe Oliveira sent off after players from both teams clashed in the dying minutes.

Indonesia eventually held out for a slim 1-0 victory.

Later that night, Thai midfielder Chaiyawat Buran and Cambodian striker Sok Samnang both received their marching orders for lashing out and stamping respectively moments before half-time in Thailand's 3-0 victory.

Phicha Au-Tra gave Thailand the lead in the 35th minute while Nattawut Sombatyotha scored a brace in the second half.
