ATM and Penang are dangerous, says Brendan
The Red Warriors will face Super League champions JDT, ATM and Penang in Group C of the 2014 Malaysia Cup, which will kick off on August 13.
Despite being a relatively straightforward group, Brendan chose not to underestimate the Gladiators, who struggled all season but managed to stave off the Super League relegation on the final day of the season, and Premier League outfit Penang.
“We cannot rule ATM and Penang out because the Malaysia Cup is just like the FA Cup in England, where it is not unusual for bottom teams to beat top teams,” said the Australian-born Malaysian in Kota Bharu on Monday.
“I know Syed Adney [ATM goalkeeper] and talk to him all the time, so I know that his team is growing with confidence especially after finishing the season off fantastically.
“They have also got a lot of experienced players, so they will be difficult to beat.
“As for Penang, they obviously did really well in the Premier League since they managed to qualify for the Malaysia Cup, but other than that we do not know a lot about them.
“They are the wild card and can produce things that we may not ready for.”
However, Brendan remained positive of his team's chances of progressing to the knockout stage, where they could face Terengganu, Sarawak, Perak or Kedah.
“We have trained really hard in the past six weeks and George [Boateng] has been doing a fantastic job to prepare us, so hopefully we will do well.”
