Gomez to coach Malaysia while OKS replaces to-be-sacked Bernhardt

Newly elected Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) president Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim expectedly announced Mario Gomez as Tigers coach but he caught many by surprise in announcing a new coach for Malaysia under-22.

Ong Kim Swee was sacked as Malaysia coach but his services would still be required as he will replace Malaysia under-22 coach Frank Bernhart, who is currently with the team at the Dubai Cup.

"Mario Gomez can start work as soon as this week. I will get my people into FAM in a matter weeks,"  said Tunku Ismail.

"I don't see Bernhardt as someone I can work with, so Ong will take charge of the team."

Bernhardt has been preparing the squad for the 2017 SEA Games since coming on board last year. Last year, Tunku Ismail told Bernhardt he would not be around for long and the Crown Prince of Johor has wasted no time.

For Ong, the demotion means it is back to square one for him. Having won the 2011 SEA Games, he has been patiently awaiting his chance with the national team. He was also coach at the 2013 and 2015 Games.
