JDT edge MSL leaders Pahang in five-goal thriller

Defending champions Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) flexed their muscles to defeat Malaysia Super League (MSL) leaders Pahang 3-2 at Larkin Stadium on Friday.

The Southern Tigers moved up to third in the standings with three points, but Selangor could regain third spot if they defeat Perak on Saturday.

Second-placed Kedah, meanwhile, could overtake Pahang at the top should they collect maximum points against Malacca in Alor Setar.

JDT, who have a game in hand against teams above them in the standings, had to dig deep as Pahang took the lead through MSL top scorer Matheus Alves after 14 minutes.

The hosts struggled to get into the game and simply could not find their rhythm until Afif Amiruddin handled the ball in the box to concede a penalty.

Safiq stepped up but saw Wan Azraie Wan Teh save the 30th-minute attempt, only for Hazwan to find the back of the net from the rebound.

Safiq later played a through ball for Hazwan to net his second before the teams entered the break.

Safiq scored JDT's third in the 56th minute after calmly slotting in a S. Kunanlan cut-back but Alves reduced the deficit with a stunning free-kick in the 68th minute to revive Pahang's hopes.

The equaliser, however, failed to materialise despite them enjoying a better share of possession toward the end of the match.
