JDT swiftly promote Mora as Gomez's replacement

Mexican Benjamin Mora, who last season took charge of Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) II in the Malaysia Premier League (MPL), will replace Mario Gomez in the Larkin hotseat.

Hours after shocking football followers with the departure of the Argentine on what has been described as mutual terms, the Southern Tigers announced Mora as his replacement for the 2017 season.

Mora will begin his duties immediately as the club faces Kedah in the Malaysia Super League (MSL) opener at Larkin Stadium on Friday. The match also doubles up as the curtain-raising Sultan Ahmad Shah Cup.

"It has always been a major part of our long term planning to educate, develop and provide opportunities from within the JDT family," read a statement by JDT Sports Director Alistair Edwards.

"JDT II is not only a development focus for players but also for the coaches and Benjamin Mora in the time he has been at JDT has shown that on a low budget he has been able to get JDT II to play in line with JDT philosophy.

"Mora in the off-season spent one month at Atletico Marid as part of his professional development to prepare him for this role."

Prior to joining JDT II last year, Mora had spells in Mexico with Cafetaleros, Guerreros, Gallos Blancos and Atlante

Mora, who guided JDT II to a third-placed MPL finish in last year, has big shoes to fill following Gomez's track record since 2015.

Gomez won two MSL titles, an AFC Cup, the FA Cup and two Sultan Ahmad Shah Cups during his tenure.
