Plazibat does it again to send Home United into AFC Cup ASEAN final

Stipe Plazibat came to his side’s rescue once again as Home United came from behind to edge Global-Cebu FC 3-2 in the AFC Cup zonal semi-final second leg at Jalan Besar Stadium.

The Protectors had to come from behind twice against the 10-man Global, with Song Ui Young and Plazibat scoring the vital equalisers. The Croatian assassin then popped up with a late winner right at the death.

Home qualified for the ASEAN final 5-4 on aggregate and will face either Malaysian giants Johor Darul Ta’zim or another Philippines outfit Ceres in August in a two-legged tie.

The turning point in the game came in the 71st minute, with Global suffering from deja vu and going a man down once again

The hosts were leading on away goals after the first leg had ended 2-2 but they found themselves trailing on aggregate just five minutes into the match.

Darryl Roberts broke free into the box and earned a penalty after Hassan Sunny brought him down, which Germaine Agustien converted.

The Protectors responded immediately as Plazibat laid the ball on for Amiruldin Ashraf to strike at goal from inside the box, requiring Patrick Deyto to push the ball behind the post.

There were further chances for Home, but both Plazibat and Khairul Nizam failed to put their efforts on target after meeting Izzdin Shafiq's deliveries.

Song scored the first equaliser for Home

Home finally drew level on 36 minutes, with Song allowing Shamil Sharif’s throw-in to bounce before unleashing an unstoppable volley from the edge of the box past Deyto.

Global enjoyed a rare chance to take back the lead just before the break, but Hikaru Minegishi failed to find the target despite having only Hassan to beat.

After the restart, Amiruldin should have hit the back of net but he somehow drilled wide from inside the box.

That gave Home the impetus to begin their onslaught on Global’s goal

The Protectors paid for the miss moments later, as Shu Sasaki was on hand to head the ball over the line after Hassan had parried Minegishi’s shot into his path in the 49th minute.

Another chance went begging for Home in the 65th minute, with Faris Ramli playing a sumptuous through ball to Plazibat but the striker shot wide despite having all the time in the world.

The turning point in the game came in the 71st minute, with Global suffering from deja vu and going a man down once again. Dennis Villanueva went in with a high foot on Marijan Suto and was given a straight red card.

That gave Home the impetus to begin their onslaught on Global’s goal and their efforts nearly paid off in the 75th minute, with Paul Mulders having to make a goalline clearance from Song.

However, Plazibat restored parity with two minutes of regulation time remaining, as he ran onto Irfan’s flick-on and buried the ball from close range.

The striker then stepped up to curl home a brilliant free-kick from 20 yards out, after Suto was brought down deep in injury time.
