Barnes takes over at Tranmere

Tranmere Rovers have appointed former Liverpool and England winger John Barnes as their new manager, the English third division club said on Monday. The 45-year-old Barnes, who was capped 79 times for England, stepped down from a short stint as coach of Jamaica recently having won the Caribbean Championship last December. Barnes will begin a second spell as a club manager, having had a short stint at Scottish Premier League club Celtic which ended in him being sacked in 2000. "I am delighted John has agreed to become our manager because he was the first choice for the position," Tranmere chairman Peter Johnson said. Jason McAteer, another former Liverpool player, will be assistant manager to Barnes at Tranmere. INTERVIEW: Ask A Silly Question - John Barnes
