Cavenaghi helps Bordeaux beat Valenciennes

PARIS - Fernando Cavenaghi scored his ninth goal in Ligue 1 this season to help Girondins Bordeaux overcome bottom club Valenciennes 2-1 and move up to third on Friday. The Argentine striker netted what proved to be the winner by capitalising on a deflected Yoann Gourcuff freekick early in the second half and joined Olympique Lyon's Karim Benzema at the top of the league's scoring charts. Bordeaux now have 29 points from 17 games, five points behind leaders Lyon who visit struggling Nantes on Saturday. Bordeaux's Morocco forward Marouane Chamakh had opened the scoring after 35 minutes when he headed home a cross from Brazilian Wendel. Valenciennes, who had the best chances before Bordeaux took the lead, fought back and Gregory Pujol put them level with a powerful left shot before the interval. The defeat leaves the northern side bottom on 11 points. The game was brought forward from Saturday to give Bordeaux an extra day's break before they visit AS Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday with one of the two Group A qualifying spots at stake. Bordeaux, without a win in their previous three Ligue 1 games, trail second-placed Stade Rennes only on goal difference. The Brittany side visit Caen on Saturday.
