Celtic keen to capture Keane

Celtic have emerged as surprise contenders for the signature of Tottenham Hotspur forward Robbie Keane, according to reports.

The 29-year-old has netted six league goals in 19 appearances since returning to White Hart Lane in February following an unsuccessful six-month spell at Liverpool.

However, the Republic of Ireland international - who has netted 40 goals in 92 outings for his country - now finds himself facing stiff competition for places under Harry Redknapp, with Jermain Defoe, Peter Crouch and Roman Pavlyuchenko all vying for starting berths.

As a result, the former Leeds and Inter Milan man started Saturday's 3-1 defeat to Manchester United on the left wing, with Defoe and Crouch paired up front.

And, according to the Daily Mirror, Celtic will attempt to lure the Irishman north of the border in January, in order to guarantee the striker regular first-team football.

Reports claims that Spurs will demand £7 million to secure Keane's services, with Celtic midfielder Scott Brown - who was linked with a move to Spurs earlier this summer - possibly heading in the opposite direction as part of the deal.
