Chelsea are believed to have approached Argentinian outfit Independiente over highly-rated goalkeeper Fabian Assmann. The 23-year-old is thought to be on the summer wish-lists of several Premier League outfits, including Arsenal and newly-promoted Birmingham and Wolves. However, Roman Abramovich's Blues are believed to have made first contact over a potential move for the talented glove-man, with the Stamford Bridge outfit in need of cover for Petr Cech following Carlo Cudicini's transfer to Tottenham in January. "We have been made aware that Chelsea have gone to the club and made contact," Assmann's representative Barry McIntosh told skysports.com. "However, there are a number of clubs looking at him and it is too early to say where it is happening." But McIntosh added Chelsea may hit a stumbling block, with Assmann likely to be reluctant to join a new club as second-choice stopper, as the goalkeeper sets his sights on next year's World Cup in South Africa. "Assmann will be playing for Argentina very soon, and with a World Cup coming up he has a very good chance of making the squad," he said. "So for him to go somewhere as number two, we are not sure if that is going to be the best option, if somebody else was to offer first-team football then we would have to look very closely at that." Earlier this month, Assmann himself confirmed Chelsea's interest in his services, but insisted he is fully focussed on playing for his current club until the summer. "Chelsea interest exists as from June, but right now I'm only thinking about Independiente," he said. "I always listen to what my agents say. When they advised me that there were people from Chelsea observing the match against Tigre, I was very surprised. "I am concentrating on Independiente and it hurts to look at the table. Because as well as having few points, we are one of the teams who have conceded the most goals." Independiente currently lie 16th in the 20-team Primera Division, conceding 26 goals in 14 games.
