Dossena: Aquilani itching to make impact

Liverpool defender Andrea Dossena has revealed that Alberto Aquilani is nearing full-fitness and is itching to make his debut for his new club. The Italian playmaker joined the Reds in August in the wake of Xabi Alonso's €30 million move to Real Madrid, but has yet to feature after undergoing ankle surgery. However, the former Roma man is now taking part in training with Rafael Benitez's side, and fellow countryman Dossena is confident he can help transform the Reds' fortunes following three consecutive defeats to Fiorentina, Chelsea and Sunderland. “Alberto will be back in action in a few weeks,” he said on Radio Incontro. “He is running and he seems really motivated. I am helping him understand the English football world and I hope he will be back soon. He will be useful.”

Dossena is also currently sidelined nursing an adductor muscle problem.

And the defender insisted that he is not looking for a move back to his homeland, and is instead prepared to fight for his place in both the Liverpool and Italy sides ahead of next summer's World Cup finals.

“I have been out for about a month and I guess it’s going to be 10 more days before I come back,” he said.

“I am just asking to play regularly, particularly with the World Cup looming.

“There has never been any concrete interest from other teams, especially from Italian clubs.”
