Ferguson urges Evans to get wed

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has urged central-defender Jonny Evans to tie the knot with his girlfriend in order to help his professional football career.

“Marriage helps footballers. It’s good for the stability of a footballer to get married. They settle down. You know where they are,” he said ahead of the Red Devils' Champions League clash with Wolfsburg.

England boss Fabio Capello recently made a similar observation about Wayne Rooney following the striker’s outstanding performance against Croatia earlier this month, commenting “I think it is after his matrimonials.”

Evans is set to return to action on Wednesday night after a spell on the sidelines through injury.

And Ferguson was happy to put his player on the spot during the pre-match press conference, advising Evans' girlfriend - who was present at the media gathering - to: “get him tied down, dear. Rings are cheap now.”

However, an embarrassed Evans was quick to brush aside talk of wedding bells.

“I don’t want to talk about it. My girlfriend is sat there right in the middle of you all,” he said.
