Foster signs new United deal

Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster has signed a contract extension that will keep him at Old Trafford until 2013, the club said on Tuesday.

Foster, 26, who has won two England caps, has been hampered by injury throughout his career and missed the end of last season after needing surgery on a ruptured ligament in his right thumb.

"Ben is seen as one of the best young goalkeepers in England and we genuinely see him as a successor to Edwin van der Sar," United manager Alex Ferguson told the club's website.

Since joining United four years ago he has only played 10 times for the first team, but was instrumental in helping United win the League Cup last season.
