Huth handed Germany recall

BERLIN - Defender Robert Huth was recalled to Germany's squad for the first time in almost two years for a brief Asian tour later this month with several players missing.

The last of the Middlesbrough central defender's 17 caps came at the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

"We never wrote him off," said Germany coach Joachim Loew. "He was outstanding in the Premier League this season and we are happy for his return."

Loew also included newcomers Manuel Neuer, now Schalke's first choice goalkeeper, VfL Wolfsburg's Christian Gentner and VfB Stuttgart duo Brazilian-born Cacau, who became a German citizen a few months ago, and Christian Traesch.

The Euro 2008 runners-up will play friendlies with China in Shanghai on May 29 and United Arab Emirates on June 2 in Dubai.

Germany will be without captain Michael Ballack, whose team Chelsea are in the FA Cup final, injured Real Madrid defender Christoph Metzelder plus seven players from Bayer Leverkusen and Werder Bremen who are in the German Cup final also on May 30.
