Kinnear optimistic Owen will stay at Newcastle

Newcastle United manager Joe Kinnear is hopeful Michael Owen will sign a new contract after holding talks with the England striker this week.

"I am optimistic now having spent that time with him but we will know in the next few days," Kinnear told the club's website on Thursday.

The 29-year-old Owen, who has scored nine goals in 10 starts this season, is out of contract at the end of the campaign and has been offered a long-term deal.

"He's had a good offer ... it's over three years," said Kinnear. "He was happy with the length of time.

"I want Michael more than any amount of cash. He is getting fitter and sharper and has come back from injuries, he is a top player."
