Lazio join race for Van der Vaart

Lazio are the latest club interested in signing Real Madrid midfielder Rafael van der Vaart and will make a move for him in January, according to reports.

The Dutch international - who has made 32 league appearances for the Bernabeu outfit since arriving from Hamburg - seemed surplus to requirements in the Spanish capital this summer, following the club's £200 million spending spree on Kaka, Cristiano Ronaldo, Xabi Alonso, Karim Benzema, Alvaro Arbeloa and Raul Albiol.

However, despite being linked with Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Everton, Aston Villa, Liverpool and Arsenal, the midfielder, who has been capped 69 times by his country, was spared the chop following the sales of Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder to Bayern Munich and Inter Milan respectively.

Unsurprisingly, Van der Vaart has failed to feature in any of Real's three matches in 2009/10 against Deportivo La Coruna, Espanyol and FC Zurich.

And, according to Tuttomercatoweb, Lazio have expressed an interest in recruiting the playmaker when the winter transfer window opens in the New Year.

The report claims that the Dutchman could be available for as little as €10 million.
