Matuidi: I thought I would move
The 22-year-old has made more than 60 appearances in all competitions for the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard outfit since arriving from Troyes in 2007, and earned caps at both French U19 and U21 level, making 24 outings for the latter.
As a result, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Everton were all linked with the midfield enforcer during the close-season.
However, the transfer window opened and closed again with a move to England failing to materialise for the Clairefontaine graduate.
And although Matuidi admitted that he believed a deal would be completed in time, he is happy to continue developing his game in France.
"It wasn't easy. I had contact and at one point I thought a move would happen," he told skysports.com.
"But I didn't move and to be honest it's not the end of the world.
"I'm fine and I'm happy leading this great club. So let's see what happens in the future
"I want to have a great season here and we'll have to see what the future holds."
