Mutu suspended following failed test

ROME - The Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) provisionally suspended Fiorentina's Adrian Mutu for alleged drugs use on Friday and revealed that the Romania striker had failed a second doping test.

Traces of appetite suppressant sibutramin were found in samples Mutu gave after Fiorentina's 3-2 win over Lazio in the Italian Cup on Jan. 20, when he scored twice to help take his side into the semi-finals, CONI said.

CONI revealed on Thursday that Mutu had given a positive sample for the same drug on January 10 at the Serie A game between the Florence club and Bari.

"Given the request from the anti-doping prosecutors' department for the athlete Adrian Mutu's suspension, the national anti-doping tribunal has suspended the athlete," said a statement on CONI's website.

Mutu was sacked by Chelsea in 2004 after using cocaine. He is appealing against an order to pay the English Premier League club 17 million euros in damages.
