BERLIN - FC Nuremberg were promoted to the Bundesliga after beating Energie Cottbus 2-0 on Sunday and winning the two-leg promotion-relegation playoff 5-0 on aggregate. Christian Eigler fired an unstoppable shot from 22 metres on 29 minutes before Slovak Marek Mintal added a second eight minutes later to hand Nuremburg an immediate return to the top flight after relegation last season. Nuremberg, a nine-time German champion, join Freiburg and Mainz 05 to have won automatic promotion as the top two finishers. Cottbus, who have said they will not continue with coach Bojan Prasnikar next season, were relegated to the second division after two disappointing performances against Nuremberg, having also lost the first leg at home 3-0. Next season will only be the second time since the fall of the Berlin Wall 20 years ago that no East German club will be playing in the Bundesliga. Around 15,000 fans spilled onto the pitch after the final whistle with another 30,000 in the stands of the Frankenstadion on a sunny afternoon singing the club's song "The legend lives."
