Porto go top after beating Belenenses

LISBON - Porto returned to the top spot in the Portuguese Premier League after a 3-1 away win at Belenenses on Sunday.

The champions have 34 points from 16 matches and are followed by Benfica with 33 points and Sporting with 31, both also from 16 matches.

On Saturday, Benfica beat Rio Ave 1-0 at home after a goal from Angolan striker Pedro Mantorras and moved clear of Sporting, who were held to a scoreless draw at Trofense.

Brazilian striker Hulk put Porto ahead after 21 minutes with a tap-in from a Mariano Gonzalez cross, and Cristian Rodriguez doubled the lead three minutes later with a headed goal.

Belenenses pulled one back 10 minutes from half-time when Porto defender Rolando deflected a low drive from Belenenses substitute Saulo into his own goal.

Porto's third goal came after 87 minutes when captain Lucho Gonzalez finished coolly from near the penalty spot, but the champions ended the game with ten men after defender Fucile was sent off for a second yellow card shortly after.

Porto are set to meet Benfica in a top-of-the-table clash next Sunday.
