Real Madrid enter race for Benzema

Manchester United face a battle to sign France striker Karim Benzema this summer, after Lyon revealed that Real Madrid have made an approach for their star striker. With Carlos Tevez and Cristiano Ronaldo on their way out of Old Trafford, Benzema is reportedly a prime transfer target for Sir Alex Ferguson during the close-season as the Red Devils seek reinforcements.

But the 21-year-old, who has netted 43 goals in 112 league outings for the Stade Gerland outfit, is said to favour a move to Spain over England, which could throw a spanner into United's works.

“Benzema and Lyon have both confirmed their intentions to continue working together,” the Ligue 1 club's director of communications Olivier Blanc told Marca.

“The only new issue is that Real Madrid contacted us a few days ago to discover the club's position regarding Benzema.”
