Rooneys cut costs with half-price meal voucher

England and Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has been cutting back on spending during the credit crunch, treating wife Coleen to a slap-up meal using a half-price voucher. Staff at a local restaurant were left stunned when the multi-millionaire footballer whipped out the voucher, entitling the couple to a saving of 50 percent, slashing their bill from £27.80 to just £13.90. According to sources, the 23-year-old took his wife to the Gusto restaurant in Alderley Edge, Cheshire, close to their £3 million mansion. “Everybody loves a special offer. Wayne and Coleen are no different,” a source told the News of the World. “They come from working class roots and if they had the voucher then why not use it? “Wayne’s boss at Manchester United Alex Ferguson told his players they shouldn’t be flash with their cash during the credit crunch and Wayne has obviously taken his words to heart.” For their discount meal, Rooney is believed to have had a chicken starter followed by spaghetti bolognese, all for a combined measly total of £7.45. “They could have afforded this meal millions of times over but they try to save the cash where they can,” the source added. “They are regulars there. It’s very near their home and they often go there for dinner. The waitress thought it was really sweet. They may be mega rich but it shows that, in many ways, they are just a normal down-to-earth couple.” Rooney, currently sidelined with a hamstring injury, generously gave a £5 tip. However, the celebrity couple may have to fork out top dollar for their food next time, as the half-price offer has since ended.
