Santander snap up Torrejon

Racing Santander have beaten Everton, Real Zaragoza and Real Mallorca to the signing of Espanyol defender Marc Torrejon. The 23-year-old defender made 71 league appearances for the Barcelona outfit from 2006-09, netting once.

However, the Spanish U21 international's indifferent form in 2008/09 had seemingly scuppered his chances of being a first team regular this season, with Torrejon admitting that a move elsewhere was inevitable.

“The past year was not especially good for me and my idea was to leave with my main options being Mallorca and Racing,” he said.

“The coach here spoke to me and gave me a lot of confidence. Now I just want to work hard and give everything to the club.”

Racing’s president, Fransisco Pernia, revealed his delight at Torrejon's arrival, with the Racinguistas having already signed defenders Jose Angel Crespo from Sevilla and Nasief Morris from Panithanikos.

"This has all turned out well because all these signings are the ones that the club, the coaches and the team wanted," he said.

"We are building a team that can do things this season."
