Sevilla skipper Navarro forced to retire

MADRID - Sevilla captain Javi Navarro retired on Tuesday after two years on the sidelines struggling to overcome a right knee injury.

"Over the last few months it became apparent that no matter how hard I tried it wasn't going to be," the 35-year-old centre-back told a news conference.

Navarro, who won four caps for Spain, had been with Sevilla for eight years lifting back-to-back UEFA Cups in 2006 and 2007, plus the King's Cup in 2007. He has not played a game over the last two seasons.
