Terry: Rooney can surpass Shilton record

England captain John Terry has backed Wayne Rooney to one day become England’s record appearance holder. David Beckham continues to hog the limelight after making his 109th international appearance on Saturday against Slovakia, making him England’s most capped outfield player ahead of 1966 World Cup-winning skipper Bobby Moore. However, Chelsea defender Terry believes that Rooney, who is set to make his 50th appearance for England on Wednesday against Ukraine at the tender age of 23, has what it takes to surpass Peter Shilton's cap record of 125. “Wayne’s potential is frightening,” he said. “I was saying to him he could possibly get 150 caps. It is a reachable target – and certainly 100. "Wayne has probably missed 20 games through injuries and suspensions, but he is very young, very talented and one of the best in the world, that is for sure.” The new issue of FourFourTwo is out now, featuring: • Interviews with Kaka, Arshavin, Terry, Motty, Stam, Dave Mackay & the Chuckle Brothers • The Top 50 Football League Players • Football’s Top 20 Hoaxes • The Best Youth Team Ever • Inside The Damned United • Swansea vs Cardiff Plus a FREE 36-page England supplement ENGLAND FANS!
