Van Bommel suffers toe woe

BERLIN - Bayern Munich captain Mark van Bommel has broken his toe and will be out of action for three to four weeks, the Bundesliga club said on Sunday. In a statement on their website, the club said the midfielder would have an operation on Monday after breaking the big toe and tearing a tendon in his right foot during the 1-1 draw at Hoffenheim on Saturday. "This is very, very bitter for me after it was all going so well," Van Bommel said on the website. "But I will come back and pick up where I left off." The injury could not have come at a worse time for the 32-year-old Dutchman who had just won a battle for the defensive midfield starting position against Ukrainian new signing Anatoliy Tymoshchuk. Bayern have already been hit by other injuries, with striker Luca Toni and central defender Martin Demichelis out for several weeks. Van Bommel also pulled out of the Netherlands squad for Wednesday's friendly against England because of the injury, the Dutch soccer federation (KNVB) said in a statement.
