Aston Villa assistant manager John Robertson and chief scout Ian Storey-Moore have rubbished reports linking Martin O'Neill's side with a move for Sporting Lisbon midfielder Miguel Veloso. The Villans are in need of a new midfield recruit following the departure of Gareth Barry to Manchester City. And the 23-year-old, who has been capped seven times by his country, has long been linked with a string of Premier League sides, including Villa, as well as Arsenal, Manchester United, Manchester City, Everton and Bolton. After recently announcing he would be interested in a move abroad to further his career, Sporting fans reacted angrily, booing Veloso on a regular basis and daubing unsavoury graffiti at the club's training ground. However, the Villa Park outfit have insisted that they are not interested in signing the player. "We are working on some players like any club but this player is not in our plans," Robertson told Portuguese newspaper Record. While chief scout Storey-Moore denied suggestions that Villa scouts were recently present in Portugal to monitor Veloso's performance in a friendly against Nottingham Forest, stating: "Nobody was there for this match because Miguel Veloso does not interest our manager."
