FFT’s potential Singapore starting XI to face Cambodia

The Lions will be back in action against Cambodia and the usual suspects are unavailable, so we could be looking at an unfamiliar line-up…

We are part of The Trust Project What is it?

Under head coach V.Sundramoorthy, Singapore have been fielding more inexperienced players, as the likes of Azhar Sairudin made his international debut in June.

The coach could do the same against Cambodia, especially since regulars Hassan Sunny, Hariss Harun and others have club obligations to fulfil and are unavailable.

Looking at the players called up, FourFourTwo gives its take on how Sundram’s starting 11 will shape up.

Goalkeeper: Zaiful Nizam

Zaiful should be getting the nod to start and he is not a bad option, given his consistent displays for Balestier over the past few years.

Number one choice Hassan Sunny is unavailable and usually Izwan Mahbud would man the sticks.

But Izwan has not been at his best for Tampines Rovers this season and was out injured recently.

Sundram has called up uncapped Syazwan Buhari and Khairulhin Khalid too. However, the latter is reportedly injured while the other should come on as a substitute, if anything.

Right-back: Faritz Hameed

This spot seems to be a fight between Faritz and Nazrul Nazari, although Madhu Mohana and Shakir Hamzah are equally capable of operating there.

In terms of defensive abilities, Faritz would offer more protection compared to the pint-sized Nazrul.

While he might not be as skillful as the Hougang right-back, Faritz still provides adequate overlaps and that could give him the edge.

Left-back: Shakir Hamzah

Shakir might not offer as much going forward but he is solid at full-back. His ability to play across the back also will offer Sundram the chance to test out various backlines.

Against Cambodia, Shakir can use the opportunity to hone his cross abilities and add another weaponry to his arsenal.

Centre-back: Abdil Qaiyyim

In terms of form, Abdil is arguably the most in-form defender in the squad at the moment. His willingness to throw his body on the line just to clear any danger is second to none and it will prove handy against the young but speedy Cambodians.

With regular centre-back Baihakki Khaizan unavailable, Sundram might just give Abdil his international debut to see how he copes with football at that level.

Centre-back: Afiq Yunos

While most suspect Madhu Mohana will partner Abdil in defence, it would be a travesty to Afiq if he was not given the chance instead.

In all honesty, Madhu is a superb defender but his form with Warriors this season has been shaky.
