FourFourTwo Picks: The Right Wingers
But here's the twist. Instead of posting our predicted lineups all at one go, Jeremy Lim and Dominic Neo will reveal one member of the team each day, as we count down the number of sleeps till the big match.
Without further ado, we present FourFourTwo Picks: The Right Wingers.
Praise be, Pereyra!
Position: Right Winger
Team: Juventus FC
Roberto Pereyra’s flashy moves are bringing him places. Antonio Di Natale, his former captain at Udinese, reckons he can be as good as Alexis Sanchez. A key fixture for Argentine giants River Plate in his youth, Italian audiences caught their first glimpse of the exciting 23-year-old when the Zebrette signed him up in 2011.
Now, Juventus are the latest beneficiaries of their smaller black-and-white cousins’ extensive scouting network. Continuing their practice of recruiting the best talent around, young and hungry Pereyra has been put at Massimiliano Allegri’s disposal. His ability to beat his man in the dribble, plus a versatility that sees him occupying multiple roles, are expected to give the Italian champions added quality in the final third.
But talent only gets prospects like Pereyra so far. Hard work is vital for the versatile attacker to complete the rest of his journey. Luckily, Di Natale is there again to vouch for his commitment and work ethic. “He will not suffer in making the jump to a big club. There are few midfielders around with his features. On the wing, as a midfielder or an attacking midfielder, he is flexible. Roberto is a great player. He defends like [Juventus midfielder Arturo] Vidal, but compared to the Chilean he has greater mobility.”
High praise, indeed.
Pejic! at the Disco
Position: Right Inside Forward
Team: Singapore Selection
Club: Warriors FC
Pejic's first season in Singapore has been nothing short of groovy. 10 goals and nine assists in 17 games is a remarkable return at any level. Pejic effectively guarantees you a goal every game. That is quite a statistic.
It is not just Pejic's terrific output that deserves praise. This versatile Croatian is not just a highlights player – his all round play has been excellent. His composure, control, awareness and vision, especially in the final-third, have been eye-catching. With his sweet left foot, the versatile wide forward has been threading delightful, incisive passes through opposition defences with remarkable ease. Pejic dead-balls are, well, deadly too, usually whipped into the box with intent and ferocity. Peter Whittingham-esque, almost.
The ex NK Lokomotiva, NK Zagreb and Hapoel Ramat Gan player has also forged a telepathic connection with Nicolas Velez, which surely weighed on Stange’s mind when he decided to call the duo up to the Singapore Selection team. Pejic finds Velez’s runs with unerring precision. This understanding will certainly bolster the Singapore Selection’s attack.
Pejic’s ability to fill in at left-back, centre forward and on either wing is a huge asset as well. Tactically versatile and aware, the 28-year-old is a classy addition to the Singapore Selection squad.
FourFourTwo will be at the Singapore Sports Hub on August 16 to watch the Singapore Selection take on Juventus FC. Will Pogba and Hariss dazzle fans with their footwork?
