Quick-Fire Questions with John Barnes
The occasional Astro SuperSport guest pundit was recently down in Malaysia for the launch of Piala Futsal iM4U Presented by Standard Chartered Trophy Road to Anfield 2014, a nationwide futsal tournament hosted to unite the youth of Malaysia under the umbrella of sports. Open to all amateur players aged 18 and above, the competition has been scheduled to run from February 28th to April 20th, kicking off with regional qualifiers before ending with the finals in the Kuala Lumpur.
Speaking at the launch, Efny Johan, Director of Brand Management Group of iM4U said, “The Piala Futsal iM4U has been in the pipeline since October 2013, but we decided to run the event only in 2014 to latch on to the World Cup fever. It is also a means to unite the youth of Malaysia in the name of sport, which is also one of the pillars of iM4U. Teams participating in the tournament are encouraged to form teams with mixed races. It is an extension of the #share4unity campaign launched by iM4U during the recent Barcelona vs Malaysia game.”
The winner of the tournament will get an opportunity to represent Malaysia at the Standard Chartered Trophy Road to Anfield 2014 tournament, where they can stand a chance to win prizes worth up to RM125,000. The main prize presented by Standard Chartered incliudes a trip to the UK to watch Liverpool FC play their final home game of the 2013/14 season at Anfield, and a professional training session with Liverpool legends and Academy coaches in preparation of the finals. John Barnes will be one of the legends on hand to mentor the finalists.
On the Standard Chartered Trophy Road to Anfield 2014 tournament, Osman Morad, Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer of Standard Chartered Malaysia Berhad said, “Standard Chartered knows that Malaysians love football. That’s why we are delighted to share opportunities arising from our sponsorship of Liverpool FC. This event will provide the participants with wonderful experience and of course the winners will have the unique pleasure of playing at Anfield and being coached by Liverpool FC.”
Meanwhile, Barnes said the winner would get to enjoy the full Liverpool experience. "It is more than just a tournament as the teams that compete will get to enjoy everything that Liverpool have to offer,” said the Liverpool legend. "Teams from 14 nations will be competing there, so it definitely will be a great experience for the team that represents Malaysia. With a nationwide tournament to select the best this year, I am sure Malaysia will be well represented at Anfield."
