Argentina midfielder Javier Mascherano revealed his pain after his country's 1-0 World Cup final loss to Germany. "The pain is immense," Mascherano told reporters after full-time.
"We gave what we could and are sorry for us and for the people. This sadness is for life."
Philipp Lahm hailed the resilience of Germany as they upstaged Argentina 1-0 after extra time to claim their fourth World Cup crown. "What we have done and how we have toiled, that's incredible," Lahm told reporters.
"This distinguishes this team. This is an incredible feeling."
Fred has announced that he is to retire from international football following Brazil's disappointing World Cup campaign. "For me, the Selecao is finished," Fred told the Estado de Sao Paulo newspaper.
"I take my share [of the blame]. I wanted to do more. I was not hurt or have any physical problems. But again I say it is the fault of everyone."
Julio Cesar has also effectively called time on his Brazil career after the hosts' World Cup campaign ended in disastrous fashion. "It [Brazil's failure] is a sad moment for Brazilian football. Now I think it is time to relax and try to forget about all of this," he said.
"The time has come for other goalkeepers and I think Brazil has seven or eight who are quite capable of pulling on the national jersey."
Sportswear giant Adidas has vowed to continue working with Luis Suarez, despite the striker's four-month ban for biting an opponent. The Uruguay forward was suspended from all football-related activity following his clash with Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup.
