S.League Players’ View: Happy 51st Birthday, Singapore!

It’s the nation’s birthday today and FourFourTwo asked our S.League players what it means to be a Singaporean!

Fadli Kamis (Balestier Khalsa)

1) What does being Singaporean means to you?

It makes me feel proud. We may be a small country but beyond these shores many actually look up to us.

2) What makes you feel uniquely Singaporean?

There are certain things unique to us Singaporeans only, such as our Singlish. Our multi-racial harmony is something to be proud of too. And of course, National Service, which all Singaporean boys are obligated to serve!

3) Your proudest moment to be called a Singaporean?

When I served my National Service, I could really feel a sense of belonging and wanting to protect my nation and loved ones.

4) A local delicacy you cannot do without?

Definitely Nasi Lemak!

Al-Qaasimy Rahman (Geylang International)

1) what does being Singaporean means to you?

It means the world to me. I might sound patriotic, but I do have plenty of random thoughts while driving, how lucky am I to be born a Singaporean.

Out of the many countries in the world, what are the odds of being placed in such a beautiful, clean and safe country?

2) What makes you feel uniquely Singaporean?

The harmony. Growing up with people from all kinds of races, religions and backgrounds.. Never once I have a hatred thought for any group of people.

Everyone has their personal differences, but it's amazing how Singaporeans never bothered about them.

It's the way we are all brought up in this country. Malay, Chinese, Indian and others, we are all equal. We are all Singaporeans.

3) Your proudest moment to be called a Singaporean

Putting on the National Team Jersey. Telling my opponents that I'm a Singaporean. And I fight for my country.

4) A local delicacy you cannot do without?

I don't know where it originates from. But it's everywhere in Singapore. Nasi Lemak!

Fabian Kwok (Tampines Rovers)

1) What does being Singaporean means to you?

To be Singaporean to me, means to be synergistic. Alone, we are nothing. However, putting aside differences and forming similar goals, we as Singaporeans are united as one.

2) What makes you feel uniquely Singaporean?

Diversity. Our multi-racial society and culture is something I truly appreciate.

No matter your race or religion, there is mutual respect for each other. It's not often you find temples, churches and mosque lined up along the same stretch of road.

And after, everyone goes to the same hawker also because of our diversity in eateries.

3) Your proudest moment to be called a Singaporean?

During my commissioning parade which marked the end of my Officer Cadet Course.

National service really helped me grow and mature as a person. Putting us through difficult moments which allow for us to appreciate what we have and not to take things for granted.

Peace and harmony does not exist in Singapore for no reason.

4) A local delicacy you cannot do without?

Chicken rice. The simplest yet most satisfying taste. The best part is that it can be found at almost any coffee shop in Singapore!
