Andik out to emulate Bambang and Elie

Indonesian starlet Andik Vermansyah is eager to make a name for himself at Selangor and attain the same status as compatriots Bambang Pamungkas and Elie Aiboy...

Prior to the Malaysia Cup win on Saturday, Andik told FourFourTwo he wanted to win the trophy to bring back some cheer in his homeland. Indonesian football had been plunged into a dark era following FIFA’s blanket ban due to political interference in the county then.

And the 24-year-old was all smiles looking ahead to the future as he struggled to contain the joy of winning the Malaysia Cup on Saturday as he dedicated the win to his country, reiterating how he wanted to emulate compatriots Bambang and Elie.

“I hope this is a stepping stone for Indonesian players so they can play abroad and gain more experience,” he said.

“This is also a chance for me to shine. I want to emulate Bambang and Elie at Selangor. They are big players here and back in Indonesia. Selangor is big back home because these two and I want to be a reason for that too.”

“This is the first time I’ve earned a winners medal and it’s even more special that I did it abroad. It’s also satisfying because not many gave us a chance to win trophies. Those critics only made me work harder for Selangor.”

Andik's similarities to Bambang and Elie, who both signed for Selangor in 2005, are striking. The former arrived at a time when Selangor had not won a trophy since the 2010 Malaysia Super League (MSL).

Simlarly, Bambang and Elie arrived with the intention to take Selangor back to the top flight. They went on to win the Malaysia Premier League (MPL), FA Cup and Malaysia Cup that very season.

Now, Andik is aiming to help usher in an era of success at the side and believes that Mehmet Durakovic can be the man who brings back the glory days, concluding: “I believe this is a start for Selangor.

"This team have many young and talented players and we must keep working hard and build on what we have. The coach [Durakovic] can take Selangor higher."
