Daniel Bennett to reprise Suzuki Cup partnership with Madhu Mohana

Just when it seemed like his playing days were over after Geylang International released him, Singapore veteran defender Daniel Bennett has turned back the clock and signed with Tampines Rovers to continue his S.League journey.

According to sources, the 39-year-old centre-back has been added to the Stags' impressive defensive line-up that comprises Madhu Mohana, Shakir Hamzah, Fahrudin Mustafic, Jufri Taha, Irwan Shah and Farhan Rahmat.

Despite his age, Bennett was arguably V. Sundramoorthy’s best defender during their 2016 AFF Suzuki Cup campaign, but his experience failed to lift the Lions as they suffered a disappointing group stage exit.

At club level, Bennett has won the league on five occasions, while he tasted Singapore Cup glory twice. He made 23 appearances for the Eagles in 2016, forming an impressive centre-back partnership with Yuki Ichikawa.

Tampines coach Akbar Nawas will probably pair Bennett with Madhu in hope of attaining the watertight combination that served Singapore well in Manila, to enable the Stags to return to past glories.

Coach Nawas seems to be going for experience this year, with the signings of seasoned campaigners like Bennett, Khairul Amri, Imran Sahib, Jamil Ali and Hafiz Rahim adding much-needed pedigree to his roster.

The Stags are leaving for their pre-season tour to Malaysia on Friday and the five-day training camp will see them take on Terengganu and other Malaysian clubs in preparation for the upcoming S.League season, scheduled to kick off on 23 February.
