Geylang and Hougang handed tough Singapore Cup draw

Geylang International and Hougang United were handed tough assignments in the preliminary rounds of the Singapore Cup after drawing Philippines sides Global FC and Ceres-Negros respectively.

Balestier Khalsa and Warriors FC on the other hand were drawn against opponents from Cambodia. Domestic champions Boeung Ket Angkor are slated to face the Tigers, while Nagaworld FC take on the Warriors.

Global and Ceres are both in the AFC Cup semi-finals, with Global set to face Home United over two legs in May. Ceres defeated Tampines Rovers twice in the group stages this season and were also Singapore Cup second runners-up last year.

Ceres is a strong team; they are in the AFC Cup semi-finals so it's not easy to play them

“Ceres is a strong team; they are in the AFC Cup semi-finals so it's not easy to play them,” Hougang coach Philippe Aw said after the draw.

“But it's good that we are playing tough opponents. It's good for the the boys to see where we stand in the region.

“With Ceres having played so many games with Singapore teams in recent years, we are going to be able to scout them properly.

“If we had maybe taken the Cambodian team  it would be slight easier, but let’s see and prepare well and give them a good game — it's a Cup game so anything can happen.”

Ceres have shown they are no pushovers in recent years

On the same day of the draw, RHB also extended their sponsorship of the Singapore Cup for another three years through to 2019.

The banking corporation has been title sponsors for the past 12 editions and the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) expressed their gratitude for their continuous support over the years.

“We are immensely grateful to RHB for their continued support for the past 12 years. We are heartened that RHB has committed their support for another three years," FAS assistant marketing and business development director Rikram Jit said.

"Mike Chan and Luke Diep have both been unwavering in their support and trust in local Football. They were unhesitant when we approached them earlier this year to continue their support. We hope to repay RHB's trust in us by ensuring that the RHB Singapore Cup continues to be an exciting and thrilling competition as we find new ways to keep raising the level of competition. "
