Home United swoop in for Tampines defender Afiq

Home United have successfully lured defender Afiq Yunos away from Tampines Rovers in a big boost to the club which had the joint-second worst defence in the league last year.

Garena Young Lions comfortably had the worst defence in the S.League last season with 70 goals conceded, while Home and Balestier leaked in 42 goals each.

The Protectors will hope that the recruitment of Afiq will alleviate their defensive headaches, partnering him with Abdil Qaiyyim in the centre of defence.

Afiq Yunos will aim to be among the league's best defenders and put himself in the running for a starting place in the club's and country's backline

Afiq has represented Singapore on a number of occasions, although he failed to make the cut for V.Sundramoorthy’s AFF Suzuki Cup squad in 2016.

“Afiq offers the Protectors an assured presence in defence, with his towering presence and formidable strength at the back,” Home said in a media release.

“He is someone who can also contribute good delivery to the side in attacking areas, either by bringing the ball out from the back or scoring from set pieces.

“Afiq Yunos will aim to be among the league's best defenders and put himself in the running for a starting place in the club's and country's backline.”

Home have also tied down Mahathir Azeman and Haziq Azman for another year at Bishan Stadium, as the Protectors attempt to get a squad ready before January 30, when they will face Phnom Penh Crown in an AFC Cup qualifying match.
