Irfan: It was a special day for me

After being handed his Singapore debut, Irfan Fandi expressed his gratitude to coach Sundram for giving a chance to represent the Republic…

Irfan Fandi was ecstatic after earning his international stripes for Singapore in a 2-0 loss to Hong Kong.

The 19-year-old was tasked to lead the frontline and even though he did not get onto the scoresheet, he put in a decent performance.

The Home United youngster followed in the footsteps of his father Fandi Ahmad, Singapore’s legendary striker, who once plied his trade in Europe.

“It is every player's dream to represent the country at the international level. Today is a special day for me – to earn my first cap and to be selected in the first team,” Irfan said.

“It was not an easy match but my senior teammates were fantastic. They guided and motivated me, and that helped me settle down early in the game.”

After getting his first taste of international football, Irfan spoke of his desire to represent Singapore further.

“As a young player, there is much room for improvement and I look forward to the continued guidance of my coaches, teammates and officials,” he added.
