Le Cong Vinh’s late winner downs Suzuki Cup co-hosts Myanmar

Vietnam were made to work for three points as they earned a 2-1 win over 2016 AFF Suzuki Cup co-hosts Myanmar.

Myanmar battled hard to come from behind in the second half but Vietnam cult Le Cong Vinh struck his 50th international goal late in the game to settle the tie.

The Golden Stars dominated the first half and Nguyen Van Toah and Tran Dinh Dong were unlucky to see their shots go wide in the early stages of the game.

The visitors finally made their dominance count in the 24th minute, after Luong Xuan Truong threaded a ball through to Nguyen Van Quyet, who finished with aplomb.

The hosts could have leveled matters just before the break but Win Niang Soe lashed his shot just over the bar after doing well to get into the box.

A much-improved Myanmar side came out in the second half, as they pushed up higher into Vietnam’s half and threw caution to the wind.

In the 47th minute, Aung Thu found space just outside the box and went for goal but his effort was straight at Tran Nguyen Manh.

Undeterred, Aung Thu tried again in the 73rd minute and this time he was rewarded as his blistering strike swiveled into goal.

Sensing blood, Myanmar continued to pour forward but Mg Mg Lwin failed to make his shots count on two occasions as he shot straight at Nguyen Manh.

The hosts paid for those misses in the 80th minute, as substitute Nguyen Toong Hoang provided Le Cong Vinh with a beautiful delivery and the latter finished emphatically.

Vietnam will face Malaysia — who have three points after a 3-2 win over Cambodia — on Wednesday while Myanmar will play Cambodia.
