Nuno: Brighter days ahead for Valencia
The Singaporean billionaire is close to finalising his takeover of the Spanish club, and had met with new manager Nuno, captain Dani Parejo and striker Rodrigo Moreno before their press conference at Brewerkz Restaurant and Microbrewery on Tuesday afternoon.
“It is fantastic to have an owner like Peter at the club, who has assured us he is in this project for the long haul,” Nuno told assembled media.
“As much as he desires the club to succeed and make the team stronger, he is giving us enough patience to rebuild the right way.”
Together with Parejo and Moreno, the 40-year-old is in Singapore for an official two-day visit.
At the core of the rebuilding exercise is youth, with the current average age of the first team squad the lowest in the division at 24.1 years.
As far as Nuno is concerned, they will form the core of the club that will push Valencia forward in the future.
“It is not about the age or passport as long as the player has the quality and is willing to work hard,” he said.
“Against Malaga, we had four players below the age of 20 in the line-up.”
Having previously led modest Rio Ave to two domestic cup finals in his second and final season last year, Valencia represents a step up for the Portuguese coach.
Nonetheless, Nuno is optimistic he has what it takes to follow the footsteps of compatriots Jose Mourinho and Andres Villas-Boas as an elite tactician.
“The pressure [of doing well] is always going to be there wherever the job is, but I am delighted to be coaching at a club as big as Valencia,” he said.
“I feel the motivation of working every day to make my players better and bring the club back to the top.”
With a top-four target this season, Nuno believes the transfer deadline day loan acquisition of Manchester City striker Alvaro Negredo will add experience and help the club build on their fine start to the season.
“Before his arrival, we only had two recognised strikers [in Rodrigo and Paco Alcacer],” he said.
“His inclusion brings age and a wealth of quality and experience into the side.
“With a blend of youth and experience, I personally believe we can build a perfect team for the club.”
