Philippe Aw to coach Singapore in Sultan of Selangor Cup

Home United head coach Philippe Aw hit a new milestone in his career after being appointed to lead the Singapore Selection for the Sultan of Selangor Cup.

Only in his second year as head coach of Home, Aw shared his delight at being named to lead the Singapore side out at the Shah Alam Stadium on May 7.

“It's an honour to be part of this as a coach, to lead a team there, so thank you for giving me this opportunity,” Aw said.

“I am still learning as a coach and this is a good chance for me to learn. I hope to bring this Cup back.

“This match is for the fans, so what’s gonna happen is that you can expect good football from the Singapore Selection, that’s a promise.”

S.League chief executive Lim Chim believes Aw was the best choice to coach the squad.

He further expressed hopes that many fans will turn up to show their support for the Singapore Selection.

“Many Singaporean fans have made the trip to Shah Alam and return with fond memories of a great evening of both entertainment and good football,” Lim said.

“I hope that this year many fans gather for this trip to the Shah Alam Stadium.”

The event will again feature a curtain-raiser between the Singapore Veterans and Selangor Veterans, before the main match pits the Singapore side against a Selangor selection.

Former participants Fandi Ahmad, Nazri Nasir and Shahri Rahim were among those in attendance at Friday’s announcement.

“I hope for many from Singapore to come to Shah Alam, that's what we want. That's why we are here every year,” said Sultan of Selangor’s Cup organising committee chairman Dato’ Abdul Karim Munisar.

“The SOS Cup is so unique. We have the curtain-raiser, where you can watch the football legends in action, (and then) it will be an exciting game and one that exemplifies the spirit of rivalry between Singapore and Selangor.”
