Potent Potters line-up headed to Singapore
The 25-year-old Joselu, a former Spain under-21 international, played for Real Madrid and Celta Vigo earlier in his career before spending the past three seasons with various clubs in Germany, most recently Hannover 96.
The Potters picked him up last month for £5.75 million and he is likely to get his first taste of action with his new club during the four-team tournament at Singapore’s National Stadium.
Arsenal, Everton and a Singapore Select XI are also taking part in the biennial event, which kicks off on July 15.
Unfortunately fans won’t get the chance to see another of Stoke’s attacking options in Singapore, with former Barcelona striker Bojan Krkic still recovering from knee surgery.
It’s understood Bojan might travel with the squad for the pre-season trip, though he isn’t quite ready to pull on his boots as the team takes every precaution with the talented 24-year-old.
During Mark Hughes’ two years at the helm, Stoke have altered their style of play from the more dour, defensive structure preferred by his managerial predecessor Tony Pulis.
The Potters have increased their scoring output in each of the past three seasons, with their 48 goals in 2014-15 the most since their return to the top flight back in 2008.
A final tally of 54 points was their highest ever, capped by a stunning 6-1 trashing of Liverpool on the final day of the season.
Diouf finished as their top-scorer with 11 goals and with Joselu now added to the line-up, they are likely to continue their newfound, free-flowing ways.
They meet Everton in the opening fixture of this year’s tournament before the Gunners take on the local contingent, with the two winning teams progressing to the final on July 18.
Stoke captain Ryan Shawcross, another new signing in Danish goalkeeper Jakob Haugaard, plus permanent addition Philipp Wolscheid – who impressed on loan last season – and Scottish international Charlie Adam are all making the trip to Southeast Asia.
Stoke arrive in Singapore on Thursday evening and will undergo an intensive training camp before the competition gets underway.
