Six out, 24 left in contention for Singapore Suzuki Cup squad

It appears Singapore interim head coach V.Sundramoorthy is one step closer to finalising his 23-man squad for the AFF Suzuki Cup.

Of the 30 called up for the international friendlies against Syria and Cambodia, only 24 were present for training at Geylang training field on Friday evening.

Most conspicuously missing in training was Hougang United forward Iqbal Hussain, even though Sundram expressed that the Lions’ recent scoring woes was a concern and Iqbal could have been an option.

The Cheetahs’ man was disappointed that he will most likely not make the cut barring any last-minute injuries, but expressed his gratitude on social media to those who supported him along the way.

Fandi Ahmad’s son Irfan Fandi looks set to miss out too, as sources in the Singapore camp believes his National Service obligation will not allow him to be available for the duration of the month-long tournament.

Home United duo Abdil Qaiyyim and Zulfahmi Arifin were called up for the trip to Doha earlier this month but were not at Friday’s training session too.

The other absentees on Friday were Balestier Khalsa goalkeeper Zaiful Nizam and Geylang International winger Shawal Anuar.

Sundram will still have to cut one more player from the team and he should make his decision after Sunday’s final friendly with Cambodia at Bishan Stadium.
